What's Included in Our Mulch Installation
The mulch is the easy part. The prep underneath is what separates a bed that looks great all season from one that's full of weeds by July. Here's what every mulch installation includes:
- Weeding. Existing weeds are removed before any mulch goes down. Mulch over a living weed is a blanket, not a barrier.
- Spade-cut bed edging. A clean, hand-cut edge where the lawn meets the bed keeps grass out and mulch in.
- Hand-spread mulch. Mulch is spread by hand to a measured depth, working carefully around your plants.
- Mulch kept off trunks and stems. No mulch volcanoes. Mulch piled against bark holds moisture and causes rot.
Why Mulch Your Landscape Beds?
Mulch isn't just for looks. A properly installed layer of mulch:
- Holds moisture in the soil, so plants need less watering.
- Protects roots from summer heat and winter freeze-thaw cycles.
- Suppresses new weeds by blocking light from weed seeds.
- Prevents erosion and soil splash on slopes and around downspouts.
- Improves your soil as natural mulches break down into organic matter.
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
More mulch isn't better. The right depth depends on what's already in the bed:
- New beds or fully broken-down mulch: 3 inches. Enough to block weeds and hold moisture.
- Refreshing an established bed: about 1 inch on top of last year's layer, enough to restore the color.
- Never more than 4 inches total. Built-up mulch smothers roots and keeps the soil soggy. If your beds have years of buildup, we offer old mulch removal before new mulch goes down.
Spade-Cut Bed Edging
A crisp edge is what makes a freshly mulched bed look professionally done. We hand-cut every bed edge with a spade, creating a small V-shaped trench between the lawn and the bed.
How Much Mulch Do You Need?
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard is a pile about 3 feet wide, 3 feet long and 3 feet tall, and it covers about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, or 108 square feet at 3 inches.
For example, 500 square feet of beds refreshed at 1 inch needs about 1.5 yards, and the same beds at 3 inches need about 4.6 yards. Don't want to do the math? We'll measure your beds for you when we quote.

| Mulch | Look | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Black dyed | Rich, dark, modern | Makes green plants and flowers pop; a popular choice for front beds |
| Brown dyed | Classic, natural-looking | Holds color well and blends with most homes |
| Red dyed | Bold, warm color | Pairs well with brick and light-colored siding |
| Natural hemlock or pine bark | Natural reddish to dark brown | Undyed, with a natural look |
| Double-shredded hardwood | Natural brown | Knits together well and stays put on slopes |
| Leaf compost | Dark, soil-like | Feeds the soil; great for perennial and vegetable beds |
| Stone | Clean, permanent | Doesn't break down; best with weed fabric underneath |

↑ Back to topKeeping Beds Weed-Free
Mulch helps suppress new weeds, but on its own it won't keep beds weed-free all season. Weeds blow in, spread from the lawn and push up from roots in the soil. For a guaranteed weed-free bed, add one of these separate services to your mulch job:
- Bed weed control service for planting beds. This is the best choice for beds full of shrubs and perennials.
- Weed fabric, recommended mainly under stone, pathways and open areas, where there aren't plants to work around.
These services are often bundled with mulch jobs to save you money. Ask about our weed-free guarantee when you request your quote.
↑ Back to topWhen to Mulch in Connecticut
The best time to mulch in Connecticut is spring, once the ground has warmed up a bit, usually late April into May. Mulch too early and it keeps the soil cold and wet longer. We also offer fall mulching.
Mulch Delivery for DIY Projects
Want to save money and spread it yourself? We offer mulch delivery. We'll deliver your mulch and dump it in a spot of your choosing, such as the driveway or the side yard, as long as our truck can safely access it.
↑ Back to topBefore Your Mulching Day
- Clear the beds. Please move planters, decor, toys, hoses and other items out of the beds. For liability reasons, our crew does not move customer belongings, so areas that aren't cleared may not get mulched.
- Weather may shift the date. Heavy rain can push a mulch job back a day or two.
How Much Does Mulch Installation Cost?
Every mulch quote is individualized. We start by visiting your property to measure your beds and meet you in person, then build a quote around your project. The main factors that affect the cost of mulch installation are:
- Square footage of your beds and the depth needed (new beds versus a refresh).
- Type of mulch: dyed, natural, hardwood, compost, stone or specialty.
- Prep work: how many weeds there are, edging, and whether old mulch needs to be removed.
- Access: how far the mulch has to travel from the truck, plus slopes, narrow side yards and backyards behind fences.
- Add-ons: bed weed control or weed fabric for a weed-free guarantee.
Just need the mulch? Mulch delivery is the most budget-friendly option.

Mulch Installation FAQs
How deep should mulch be?
3 inches for new beds or beds where the old mulch has fully broken down, and about 1 inch to refresh an established bed. Never let the total depth go over 4 inches.
When is the best time to mulch in Connecticut?
Spring, once the ground has warmed up a bit, usually late April into May. We also offer fall mulching.
How much area does a yard of mulch cover?
About 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, or 108 square feet at 3 inches. Multiply your square footage by the depth in inches and divide by 324 to get cubic yards.
Do you remove weeds before mulching?
Yes. Every bed is weeded before mulching. Mulch spread over living weeds doesn't stop them, and they grow right back through.
Is edging included with mulch installation?
Yes. Every mulch job includes a spade-cut bed edge, which keeps grass out of the bed and mulch off the lawn.
Do you guarantee weed-free beds?
Yes, when the mulch job is bundled with our bed weed control service or weed fabric. Both are separate services, and they're often bundled with mulch to save you money. Ask about the guarantee when you request your quote.
Should I put landscape fabric under mulch?
We recommend weed fabric mainly under stone, pathways and open areas. In planting beds full of shrubs and perennials, our bed weed control service usually works better.
What color mulch is best?
It's mostly personal preference. Black mulch makes plants pop and looks modern, brown looks classic and natural, and red pairs well with brick. Natural hemlock, pine bark and hardwood are great undyed options.
Do I need to remove old mulch before adding new mulch?
Not usually. A 1-inch refresh on top is fine. But if years of buildup have pushed the total depth past 4 inches, the old mulch should come out. We offer old mulch removal.
Do you deliver mulch?
Yes. We deliver mulch and dump it in a spot of your choosing, as long as our truck can access it, so you can spread it yourself and save money.
How much does mulch installation cost?
Every quote is individualized. We visit to measure your beds and meet you, then price the job based on square footage, mulch type, prep work, access and any add-ons.
Can you get a mulch that isn't on your list?
Yes. Let us know what you're looking for and we'll source specialty mulches for your project.
Do I need to be home on mulching day?
No. Just clear any items out of the beds beforehand. Our crew doesn't move customer belongings. You'll be billed after the job.
