Our Sod Installation Process

Sod is only as good as the soil it's laid on. Most sod failures come from skipped prep or poor watering, not bad sod. Here's what's included in every sod installation:

What goes under new sodCross-section of a sod installation: loosened subsoil, screened topsoil graded to pitch water away from the house, starter fertilizer, and fresh sod rolled tight on top. What goes under your new lawncross-section, not to scalehouseFresh sod, rolled tightStarter fertilizerScreened topsoilLoosened subsoilgraded to shed water away from the houseOld lawn stripped first. Loose, level, fertilized soil = fast rooting.
Old lawn out, soil graded and loosened, topsoil and starter fertilizer down, then fresh sod rolled tight.
  1. Old lawn removal. We strip the existing turf, weeds and debris.
  2. Grading. We shape the ground so water drains away from your house and doesn't pond on the lawn.
  3. Soil prep and topsoil. Compacted soil is loosened, and screened topsoil is added where needed.
  4. Starter fertilizer. Applied before the sod goes down to push fast root growth.
  5. Final rake. The surface is raked level and firmed, finishing just below walks and driveways so the sod sits flush.
  6. Sod installation. Fresh sod is laid with staggered seams, butted tight and trimmed to your beds and walks.
  7. Rolling and first deep watering. Rolling presses the roots into the soil, and the first watering soaks several inches deep.
  8. Watering plan and follow-up. You get a written day-by-day watering schedule, and we come back to check on your new lawn.

How We Lay Sod

Careful laying is what makes a sod lawn look seamless in a few weeks instead of showing a grid of lines for a whole season.

How sod is laid: staggered seamsTop view of sod rolls laid like brickwork with staggered seams, starting from the longest straight edge, pieces butted tight, and edges trimmed along a curved bed. On slopes, rows run across the slope and are staked.Laid like brickworktop viewstart along the longest straight edge (driveway)trimmed to the bedSeams staggeredlike brick, never lined upButted tightedges pushed together, never stretchedOn slopesrows run across, staked
Staggered seams, tight joints, and rows run across slopes and staked.
  • Start along the longest straight edge, usually a driveway or walk.
  • Stagger the seams like brickwork, so no joints line up.
  • Butt every piece tight, never stretched. Sod shrinks slightly as it settles.
  • On slopes, rows run across the slope and are staked so they can't slide.
  • Trim cleanly to beds, walks and edges.

Bluegrass or Tall Fescue: Which Sod Is Best for Connecticut?

Sod is grass grown on a farm for one to two years, then cut in strips with the roots and a thin layer of soil attached. We install both Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue options, including bluegrass blends and turf-type tall fescue.

Kentucky bluegrass versus tall fescue sodKentucky bluegrass spreads by underground rhizomes that knit the sod together and repair gaps; it likes sun. Tall fescue grows in clumps with deep roots, so it handles shade, drought and wear better.Bluegrass or tall fescue?Kentucky bluegrassrhizomesspreads by rhizomes: knits tight, self-repairsbest in full sunTall fescuedeep rootsdeep roots, clump-formingbetter for shade, drought & wear

Kentucky bluegrass is the most common sod in New England because its rhizomes knit the plants into a strong mat that holds together on the truck and fills its own seams in the ground. We'll recommend the right sod for your sun, soil and how you use your yard.

  • Week 6: established. Normal mowing, watering and use.
Stay off the sod until the first mow. Foot and pet traffic on unrooted sod shifts the pieces and opens the seams.

How to Water New Sod

Watering is the single biggest factor in whether new sod thrives. After installation day, watering is your responsibility, and we leave you a written plan. The rule: water hard, then back off. Never the other way around.

Sod vs. Seed: Which Is Right for You?

Sod isn't better than seed in every case. It's a different tool. Here's how they compare:

Sod versus seed over timeSide by side over time: sod is a finished lawn on day one and usable in 2 to 3 weeks; seed is bare soil at first, patchy after a month, and takes one to two seasons to fill in.Sod vs. seed: how fast you get a lawnDay 11 month1 season+SodSeedusable in 2-3 weeks1-2 seasons to fill inSod costs more up front. Seed costs less but needs the right season, and time.

Sod makes sense for slopes, new construction, a lawn you need fast, getting a house ready to sell, and areas where seeding has already failed. Seed makes sense for large areas on a tight budget. See our seeding and overseeding page.

Our Sod Guarantee

  • The sod: covered by the supplier's own warranty. Terms vary by supplier, and we'll tell you what applies.
  • The labor: we guarantee the labor to replace sod that fails.
  • Your part: the guarantee depends on following the watering plan we provide.
What voids the guarantee: underwatering or overwatering, animal damage, extreme weather and other acts of nature, and pests or disease that aren't treated promptly.

Before Your Installation Day

  • Clear the area. Please move furniture, toys, planters and other items off the lawn. For liability reasons, our crew does not move customer belongings.
  • Have your hose or sprinklers ready. Watering starts the day the sod goes down.
  • Weather may shift the date. Heavy rain can delay grading and installation.

How Much Does Sod Installation Cost?

Every sod quote is individualized. We visit your property to measure the area and meet you, then price the job. Our minimum sod project is 400 square feet. The main factors that affect the cost of sod installation are:

  • Square footage of the new lawn.
  • Old lawn removal: how much existing turf, weeds and debris have to come out.
  • Grading and topsoil: how much shaping and soil the area needs.
  • Access: slopes, tight gates and how far the sod travels from the truck.
  • Cutting and trimming around beds, walks and obstacles.
  • Sod type: bluegrass or tall fescue.

Sod Installation FAQs

When is the best time to install sod in Connecticut?

Fall is ideal, with warm soil, cool air and steady rain, and spring is nearly as good. Unlike seed, sod can go in almost any time the ground isn't frozen.

Can sod be installed in the summer?

Yes. It needs about double the watering during heat waves, often twice a day the first week, but it's far more reliable than seeding in summer.

How often should I water new sod?

Every day for the first two weeks, early in the morning (plus a midday soak in summer heat). Then every other day in week 3, about three times in week 4, twice a week in weeks 5 and 6, and about 1 inch a week after that.

How do I know if my sod is getting enough water?

Lift a corner of a piece. The soil underneath should be wet, not just damp. Curling edges or opening seams mean it needs more water.

Can you overwater new sod?

Yes. Waterlogged soil keeps roots from growing and can rot the seams. Watering at night encourages fungus. Water early in the morning and taper off on schedule.

How long does it take sod to root?

Roots start pushing into the soil in about a week. By days 10 to 14, a gentle tug on a corner should meet resistance. Sod is fully established in about six weeks.

When can I mow new sod?

Usually 2 to 3 weeks after installation, once the tug test passes. Mow high with a sharp blade and remove no more than one-third of the grass blade.

Can I walk on new sod?

Keep people and pets off until after the first mow, about 2 to 3 weeks. Walking on unrooted sod shifts the pieces and opens the seams.

Is sod better than seed?

Not better, just different. Sod gives you a finished lawn the same day, can go in almost any time of year and has a very high success rate, but it costs more. Seed costs much less but needs the right season and one to two seasons to fill in.

What is the best sod for Connecticut?

Kentucky bluegrass is the most common, because its rhizomes knit into a strong, self-repairing mat and it thrives in sun. Tall fescue is better for partial shade, drought-prone areas and heavy traffic. We install both.

Do you remove the old lawn before laying sod?

Yes. Old turf, weeds and debris are removed, then the area is graded, loosened, topsoiled and fertilized before the sod goes down.

Is there a minimum size for sod installation?

Yes, our minimum sod project is 400 square feet.

Do you guarantee new sod?

The supplier provides its own warranty on the sod, and we guarantee the labor to replace sod that fails, as long as the watering plan we provide has been followed.

How much does sod installation cost?

Every quote is individualized. We visit to measure and meet you, then price the job based on square footage, old lawn removal, grading and topsoil, access, trimming and sod type.

What towns do you install sod in?

We install sod in Farmington, Unionville, Avon, West Hartford, Simsbury, Southington, Collinsville, Canton, Burlington, Bristol, Plainville, Newington, New Britain, Bloomfield, Hartford, Windsor Locks and Suffield, CT.
