Weed Control For Beds in Farmington, CT

Weed Control for Beds in Farmington, CT

David's Landscaping provides weed control for planting beds in Farmington, CT and the surrounding towns of Avon, West Hartford, Simsbury, Southington, Collinsville, Burlington and more. Weeds in your flower beds and landscape beds steal water and nutrients from your plants, spread seed for next year, and make even a well-designed yard look neglected. Our bed weed control program combines hand pulling, targeted spot treatments and pre-emergent with four scheduled applications per season. That keeps your beds clean all year, not just for a week after weeding. If weeds come back between applications, we come back free. We're a family-owned, licensed and insured company (CT HIC# 0670708) with more than 15 years of experience.

What We Do, and What We Don't

We provide weed control for planting beds only: flower beds, shrub beds, foundation plantings, mulched beds and landscape beds. We don't apply fertilizer, pre-emergent or weed control to lawns.

For lawn repair, we offer seeding, sod installation, core aeration and dethatching.

How Our Bed Weed Control Works

Pulling weeds alone doesn't last, mulch alone doesn't last, and a single treatment doesn't last. Each one leaves a gap. We combine them so every layer covers the gaps the others leave. That's why beds stay clean for years instead of weeks.

How bed weed control works in layersCross-section of a planting bed: existing weeds removed roots and all, a pre-emergent barrier that stops weed seeds from sprouting, mulch at the right depth to block light, and four scheduled applications to catch anything new.Four layers that keep beds clean1Remove weeds, roots and all2Pre-emergent barrier3Mulch at the right depth44 scheduled applicationsweed seeds can't sproutEach layer covers the gaps the others leave.
Remove what's there, stop new weeds from sprouting, block light with mulch, and catch anything new.
  1. Remove existing weeds, roots and all. Weeds are hand pulled or spot-treated so they die back to the root, then removed from the bed, not buried under mulch.
  2. Set a barrier. A pre-emergent goes down in planted beds to stop weed seeds from sprouting. In open areas like pathways and under stone, weed fabric is used instead.
  3. Mulch at the right depth. About 3 inches on bare beds, or a 1-inch top-up on existing mulch, blocks light from reaching weed seeds. See our mulching service.
  4. Keep it up. Four scheduled applications through the season catch new weeds before they set seed.

Weed Control Methods We Use

  • Hand pulling: for weeds close to your plants and in tight spaces. Pulled roots and all.
  • Spot-spray treatments: applied directly to the weeds so they die back to the root, including tough perennial weeds that snap off when pulled.
  • Pre-emergent in beds: stops weed seeds from germinating, so new weeds never get started.
  • Weed fabric (paths and stone only): in open areas without plants, like walkways and under decorative stone.
Why weeds have to come out roots and allLeft: a weed snapped off at the surface leaves the root, and it grows right back. Right: a weed treated to the root or pulled roots and all, then removed, doesn't return.Roots and all, or it comes backSnapped off at the topsnapped toproot stays, weed grows backTreated & pulled to the rootwhole root out, nothing to regrowpulled & removed, not buried

Common bed weeds we see in the Farmington Valley include crabgrass, hairy bittercress, oxalis (wood sorrel), ground ivy (creeping Charlie), nutsedge, bindweed, purslane, dandelion and clover, plus tree seedlings like maple sprouts.

4 Weed Control Applications Per Season

Our program includes four applications per season, timed to when weeds actually grow in Connecticut. Each application is priced individually.

Four weed control applications per seasonFour applications per season: March/April before weeds sprout, May for the first flush, July for summer weeds, and September for fall-germinating weeds. Weed growth peaks in late spring and again in early fall.4 applications, timed to the weedsJFMAMJJASONDweed growthMar/AprMayJulSepPriced per application. Starting early is the cheapest way to stay ahead.
Four applications timed to the spring and fall weed flushes.
  1. March/April: pre-emergent goes down before weed seeds sprout, and early weeds are removed.
  2. May: catches the first big flush of spring weeds.
  3. July: handles summer weeds like crabgrass, nutsedge and purslane.
  4. September: stops fall-germinating weeds like bittercress before they overwinter.

Why Starting Early Matters

The best time to start weed control for beds is March into early April, before weeds start growing. Preventing weeds before they sprout is far quicker and cheaper than removing them once they're established. The earlier in the year you reach out, the less it costs.

Starting weed control early vs lateStarting in March or April means a pre-emergent and light upkeep. Starting in June means treating established weeds, waiting for them to die back, pulling and removing them, and only then starting prevention: more labor and more cost.Start in March, not Junelight workStart Mar/AprStart in Junetreatwaitpull & removethen preventpre-emergent+ upkeepeffort (and cost)
Small, steady upkeep from March costs far less than fixing an overgrown bed in June.

Already Overgrown? The Initial Cleanup

If your beds are already full of weeds, we start with a one-time initial cleanup, quoted separately, before the four scheduled applications begin:

  1. Treat: established weeds are treated so they die back to the root.
  2. Wait: the treatment is given time to work.
  3. Pull and remove: everything comes out of the bed and is hauled away.
  4. Barrier and mulch: a pre-emergent and fresh mulch seal the bed.
  5. Scheduled applications: the four-application program keeps it clean.

Should I Use Weed Fabric in My Beds?

Only in open areas without dense planting, such as pathways and under stone. In planted beds, fabric restricts your plants as they grow and spread. Mulch breaking down on top of it also becomes a layer that weeds root right into.

How Much Does Weed Control for Beds Cost?

Bed weed control is priced per application, with four applications per season. Every property is quoted individually, and quotes are free. What affects the price:

  • Total bed size and how many beds you have.
  • How weedy the beds are today. Overgrown beds need the one-time initial cleanup first.
  • When you start: starting in March or April costs less than starting in June.
  • Bundling with mulch can save money.

Weed Control for Beds FAQs

Do you do weed control for lawns?

No. We provide weed control for planting beds only. We don't apply fertilizer, pre-emergent or weed control to lawns.

How many weed control applications are there per season?

Four: March/April, May, July and September. Each application is priced individually.

How much does weed control for beds cost?

It's priced per application, based on the size of your beds and how weedy they are. Overgrown beds need a one-time initial cleanup, quoted separately. Quotes are free.

When should I start weed control for my beds?

Early in the year, before weeds start growing, typically March into early April in the Farmington Valley. Preventing weeds before they sprout is far quicker and cheaper than removing them once they're established.

Why does it cost more to start late?

Established weeds have to be treated so they die back to the root, given time to work, then pulled and removed before prevention can start. That's more labor, and you still need prevention afterward.

What methods do you use?

Hand pulling, spot-spray treatments that kill weeds to the root, pre-emergent in planted beds to stop seeds from sprouting, and weed fabric only in open areas like paths and under stone.

What if weeds come back between applications?

Call or text us and we'll come back and take care of them at no charge. That's our weed-free guarantee.

My beds are already overgrown. Can you help?

Yes. We start with a one-time initial cleanup: treat, wait, pull and remove, then add a barrier and mulch. After that, the four scheduled applications keep the beds clean.

Should I use weed fabric in my flower beds?

Only in open areas without dense planting, such as under stone or pathways. In planted beds, fabric restricts the plants, and mulch breaking down on top of it becomes a layer weeds root into.

Isn't mulch enough to stop weeds?

Mulch alone isn't enough. It blocks light, but weeds blow in on top of it and established roots grow right through. Mulch at the right depth plus removal, a pre-emergent and scheduled applications is what keeps beds clean.

How long will my beds stay weed-free?

With the full approach (removal, a barrier, mulch at the right depth and scheduled applications), beds stay clean for years.

Do I need to be home?

No. You'll be billed after each application.

What towns do you serve?

Farmington, Unionville, Avon, West Hartford, Simsbury, Southington, Collinsville, Canton, Burlington, Bristol, Plainville, Newington, New Britain, Bloomfield, Hartford, Windsor Locks and Suffield, CT.
