Landscape Design in Farmington, CT

David's Landscaping provides custom landscape design in Farmington, CT and the surrounding towns of Avon, West Hartford, Simsbury, Southington, Collinsville, Burlington and more. See your project before anything is built, and see how it will look in five and ten years as the plants grow in. Every landscape design starts with a conversation about your goals and budget, followed by a site visit. You then get your choice of a photo rendering, a to-scale 2D plan or a full 3D rendering. Our Landscape Design Process

Landscape design starts with a conversation, not a drawing. Before anything goes on paper, we want to know how you use your yard, what you love, what bothers you, and what you want to spend.

Our landscape design processFive steps: listen to your goals and budget, a site visit to assess sun, soil, drainage, slopes and views, the design, your review and revisions, then we build it.From conversation to finished yard1Listengoals & budget2Site visitsun, soil, slopes3Designyour renderings4Reviewrevise until right5Buildwe install itrevisions
Five steps from the first conversation to a finished yard.
  1. Listen: your goals, style, budget and how you want to use the space.
  2. Site visit: we assess sun and shade, soil, drainage, slopes and views on your property.
  3. Design: your design is created as a photo rendering, 2D plan or 3D rendering.
  4. Review: you review it, and we revise until it's right.
  5. Build: we install the design with plants and materials sourced for it, or you take the plan to another installer.

A network, not a single designer

We work with a network of landscape designers and nurseries, so every project is matched with the right designer and the right plants. A small front-yard refresh and a full backyard with a patio and retaining walls need different expertise, and you get it either way.

What We Look at During the Site Visit

A great landscape design fits the property it's built on. During the site visit we look at:

What we look at during the site visitTop-down site sketch: sun path from east to west across the property, shady side, the slope and where water drains, the views to frame or screen, and existing trees and plants. What the site visit tells ushouseEWshadeslope & drainageexisting treeview to frameSun & shadeSoilDrainageSlopes & gradesViews to frame or screenWhat to keep
Sun, shade, soil, drainage, slopes and views shape every design decision.
  • Sun and shade: which areas get full sun, part sun or shade, so every plant ends up where it will thrive.
  • Soil and drainage: wet spots, runoff and problem areas to design around or fix.
  • Slopes and grades: where walls, steps or grading are needed.
  • Views: what to frame from your windows and patio, and what to screen out.
  • What to keep: existing trees, shrubs and features worth working around.

Three Ways to See Your Landscape Design

Three ways to see your landscape designPhoto rendering: the new design drawn over a photo of your own yard, best for curb appeal. 2D plan: a top-down, to-scale drawing of every bed, plant and path. 3D rendering: a model you can view from any angle, best for hardscape and grade changes.Three ways to see your projectPhoto renderingcurb appeal & front yards2D landscape planbeds, plants & pathshouseABBA3D renderingpatios, walls & gradesany angle

Photo renderings

The new design is drawn right over a photo of your own yard. It's the best choice for front-of-house and curb appeal projects, because you see exactly how the new plantings will look with your home.

Custom 2D landscape plans

A top-down, to-scale drawing of every bed, plant and path, with plant names and placements. The 2D plan is the working document for installation.

Full 3D renderings

A model you can view from any angle, with the house and grades included. 3D is best for larger projects with hardscape, like patios, retaining walls, walkways and grade changes, where seeing levels and heights matters.

See What It Looks Like in Five and Ten Years

A landscape looks very different on day one than it does years later. Your renderings can show your design at installation, at five years and at ten years, so you know exactly how it will fill in.

Every plant is spaced for its mature size. Shrubs planted too close for an instant look end up crowding each other and the house. By year eight they often have to be pulled out and replaced.

Why Seeing It First Matters

  • No surprises: you know what you're getting before the first shovel goes in.
  • Compare options side by side and choose with confidence.
  • Avoid costly mistakes: moving plants, walls or patios after they're installed is expensive.
  • The right plant in the right place: designed around your sun, soil and drainage.
  • A plan for the whole property, even if you build it over time.

Common design goals we plan around: curb appeal and foundation plantings, privacy screening, low-maintenance beds, deer-resistant plant choices, native and pollinator-friendly plants, four-season interest, patios and outdoor living space, and fixing drainage or slope problems.

Can a Landscape Design Be Built in Phases?

Yes. A complete design lets you build in phases as your budget allows, for example front beds this year, a patio next year and backyard screening after that. Every phase still fits together, because it all comes from one plan.

From Design to Installation

When your design is approved, David's Landscaping can install it: planting, mulching, sod, grading, hardscapes and drainage. Plants come from our partner local Connecticut nurseries, chosen for the specific varieties and sizes your design calls for, not generic mass-market plants.

The design is yours to keep. Once it's paid for, you own the plan, and you're free to have it installed by us or by anyone else.

How Much Does Landscape Design Cost?

Landscape design is a paid service, and the price depends on the scope:

  • Which type of design: photo rendering, 2D plan or 3D rendering.
  • How much of the property it covers: one bed, the front yard, or the whole property.
  • How detailed it needs to be, including hardscape and grade changes.

Every design is quoted individually, and the quote is free. The design fee is separate from installation. Timelines and revisions vary by project, and we'll go over both when we quote your design.
