How to Plant Trees, Shrubs and Perennials So They Survive

Most plants that fail in a Connecticut landscape were not killed by disease, deer, or bad luck. They were planted too deep, mulched too high, put in the ground too late in the season, or watered on the wrong schedule. Here is the whole process, in order, with the reasoning behind each step.

There is a saying in the trade: a hundred-dollar plant deserves a two-hundred-dollar hole. It sounds like a joke about billing. It isn't. The single largest predictor of whether a new tree or shrub is alive in three years has almost nothing to do with the plant itself and almost everything to do with what happened in the first twenty minutes it was in the ground — and in the ninety days after.

This guide covers the full process for trees, shrubs, and perennials in Connecticut: when to plant, how to plant, how to mulch, how to feed, and — most importantly — how to water. It is written for our climate specifically, because the difference between a plant that establishes and a plant that heaves out of the ground in February often comes down to a two-week difference in planting date.

If you read one section, read Part Four. Watering is not one factor among many. It is the factor.

Part one

When to Plant in Connecticut

Connecticut spans USDA hardiness zones 6a in the northwest hills through 7a along the Long Island Sound shoreline. That is a meaningful spread. The last spring frost runs from roughly mid-April on the coast to mid-May in Litchfield County, and the first fall frost from early October in the hills to early November near the water. Every date in this section should be shifted a week or two depending on where you sit in that range.

Woody plants and perennials root when soil temperature is above roughly 40–45°F. That, not air temperature, defines the planting season. Roots keep growing well after the leaves have dropped and the air has turned cold — which is why fall planting works at all, and why the cutoff date matters so much.

Spring: mid-April through early June

Spring is the safest window, and the only sensible one for anything marginally hardy. Soil is workable, air is cool, rainfall is reliable, and the plant gets a full growing season to build roots before it faces a winter. Plant in spring if you are installing:

  • Broadleaf evergreens — rhododendron, mountain laurel, holly, boxwood, cherry laurel, andromeda
  • Anything rated zone 7 that you are pushing in a zone 6 town
  • Bare-root stock of any kind
  • Ornamental grasses, which root poorly in cold soil
  • Magnolia, dogwood, birch, redbud, and other thin-barked or fleshy-rooted trees

Fall: September through mid-October

Fall is excellent for the right material, and it has real advantages. Soil is still warm from summer, so roots grow vigorously. Air is cool, so the plant loses far less water through its leaves. Rain is more dependable than in July. And nurseries are clearing inventory.

Fall is the right choice for most deciduous trees and shrubs, spring-blooming perennials, and needled evergreens planted early enough in the window.

Summer: possible, but expensive in labor

You can plant in July. Container stock is available and root-disturbance is minimal. But the plant is transpiring at maximum rate through leaves it can no longer support with a reduced root system, and the watering commitment roughly doubles. If you plant in summer, plan on watering every day or two for the first month without exception.

The cutoff date, and why it is not negotiable

A newly planted tree or shrub needs roughly six weeks of soil above 45°F to push enough new root out of the root ball to anchor itself and reach water. Working backward from a typical Connecticut soil freeze:

  • Northwest hills (Litchfield, Torrington, Norfolk): plant by October 1
  • Central Connecticut (Hartford, Farmington, Middletown): plant by October 15
  • Shoreline (New Haven, Guilford, Stonington): plant by November 1

After that, you are not planting. You are storing a plant outdoors in a hole and hoping.

What goes wrong when you plant too late

Four separate mechanisms kill late-planted material, and they compound. Understanding them is the difference between accepting a delay and losing a nursery order.

1. Frost heave

When soil water freezes it expands roughly nine percent and forms horizontal ice lenses that lift everything above them. A root ball that has grown roots out into the surrounding soil is anchored and resists this. A root ball planted three weeks before the freeze has no such anchor — it gets jacked upward a fraction of an inch per cycle, and on the thaw, loose soil slumps in underneath so it never comes back down. By March the root ball is sitting an inch or two above grade with its roots in open air.

2. Winter desiccation on evergreens

This is the one that catches people out, because it looks like cold damage but it is actually drought. Evergreens — especially broadleaf evergreens like rhododendron, holly, and laurel — keep their leaves all winter and keep losing water through them on every sunny or windy day. Meanwhile the soil is frozen, so the roots cannot take up replacement water. The plant runs a moisture deficit for months.

3. No root system to draw on

A balled-and-burlapped tree arrives having lost somewhere between 80 and 95 percent of the root system it grew in the nursery field. Everything it has left is inside that ball. Until new roots push out into surrounding soil, the plant is drinking from a container roughly the size of a laundry basket. Plant in September and it has six weeks to expand that. Plant in November and it has none.

4. Unhardened growth from late feeding

Applying a nitrogen-heavy fertilizer late in the season can push a flush of soft new growth that has no time to harden off before the first hard frost. That tissue dies, and the dieback is an entry point for disease. This is one reason the feeding schedule in Part Six specifies a half-rate application in late fall rather than a full one.

Never plant these after early October in Connecticut

Broadleaf evergreens (rhododendron, mountain laurel, holly, boxwood, cherry laurel, andromeda) · birch, dogwood, magnolia, redbud, and tulip poplar · ornamental grasses · any bare-root stock · anything rated zone 7 or warmer. All of these should go in during spring. If a nursery is discounting them in late October, there is a reason.

Part two

Before You Dig

Match the plant to the site, honestly

More plants are killed by the wrong location than by bad technique. Before anything is purchased, spend a day watching the spot. Note the following:

  • Actual sun hours. Count them. “Full sun” means six or more hours of direct sun; part shade means three to six; full shade means under three. A north-facing foundation bed in Connecticut may get two hours in June and none in October.
  • Mature size, not nursery size. A three-foot arborvitae in a pot is a fifteen-foot screen in twelve years. Look up the mature spread and place the plant so it never needs to be sheared to fit.
  • Exposure. Southwest-facing walls bake in summer and swing hardest in winter. Northwest exposure takes the winter wind. Both matter more than the hardiness zone number.
  • Overhead and underground. Utility lines above, septic fields and foundation footings below. A shade tree under a service drop is a future problem you are paying to create.
  • Road salt and snow storage. Anything within fifteen feet of a plowed drive or a state road will take salt spray. Choose salt-tolerant material there — or nothing.
  • Deer pressure. In most of Connecticut this is a design constraint, not an afterthought. Arborvitae, yew, hosta, daylily, and rhododendron are deer candy.

Test your drainage before you commit

Connecticut soils are glacial. That means you may hit dense clay hardpan, a gravel lens, or a boulder within eighteen inches — sometimes all three in one bed. Poor drainage kills more shrubs than drought does, and it is invisible until the plant is already in the ground.

The percolation test takes ten minutes of work and a couple of hours of waiting, and it will save you an entire plant order:

  1. Dig a hole about 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep where you intend to plant.
  2. Fill it with water and let it drain completely. This saturates the surrounding soil so the second reading is honest.
  3. Fill it a second time. Note the water level and the time.
  4. Measure the drop after one hour.

Call Before You Dig — this is a legal requirement in Connecticut

Connecticut law requires notification before excavation, including hand digging for planting. Call 811 or file online with Call Before You Dig at least two full business days (not counting the day of the call) before you break ground. It is free, and utility crews will come out and mark buried gas, electric, water, and communications lines with paint and flags.

Two notes people get wrong: the marks locate the utility within a tolerance zone, so hand-dig carefully within about eighteen inches of any mark; and CBYD does not locate private lines — your own irrigation, invisible fence, landscape lighting, propane run from a tank, or the feed to a detached garage. Those are your responsibility to know about.

Stage and hydrate the plants before they go in

Plants sitting on a driveway in August can dry to the point of no return in a single afternoon. Once material is delivered:

  • Set it in shade if it will not go in the ground the same day.
  • Water every container thoroughly. A dry root ball is hydrophobic — water will run off the surface and down the sides of the pot without wetting the interior. If the pot feels light, submerge it in a tub or trug until bubbles stop, which can take fifteen minutes.
  • Never lift a balled-and-burlapped plant by the trunk. Carry it by the ball. Lifting by the trunk cracks the ball and severs the fine roots inside it.
  • Protect from wind in transit. Twenty minutes at highway speed with an uncovered canopy will burn foliage as badly as a drought.

Part three

Planting, Step by Step

Dig wide and shallow, not deep and narrow

This is the step where the most damage gets done, because the instinct is exactly wrong. New roots grow laterally, in the top twelve to eighteen inches of soil where oxygen is. They do not dive. So the hole should be:

  • Two to three times as wide as the root ball. Three times for clay soils and compacted sites, two for loose loam.
  • No deeper than the root ball is tall. The plant must sit on undisturbed, firm soil. If you dig deeper and backfill under the ball, that fill settles over the following months and the plant sinks — which converts a correct planting into a too-deep planting six months later.
  • Sloped, not straight-sided. A saucer profile, widest at the top.
  • Roughened at the walls. A spade in wet clay leaves a smooth, glazed surface that roots will circle rather than penetrate. Score the sides with a fork or the corner of a spade.

Keep the excavated soil on a tarp. You will be putting most of it back.

Find the root flare, and set your depth from it

The root flare — sometimes called the trunk flare — is the point where the trunk widens out to meet the first structural roots. On a correctly planted tree it is visible at the soil surface. It should look like a foot in a shoe, not a broomstick in a bucket.

Here is the problem: nursery stock is very often buried too deep in its own container or ball. Mechanical potting, repeated topping-off of media, and soil settling during field harvest all bury the flare. If you plant the root ball with its surface level with your grade, you may be planting the tree three or four inches too deep without knowing it.

So before you set anything in a hole: scrape the loose material off the top of the root ball with your fingers or a hand cultivator until you find the flare and the topmost structural roots. Sometimes this means removing two or three inches. Now measure your root ball from the flare down — that is the real depth you are planting.

Set the plant so the flare sits at grade, or one to two inches above it. In heavy clay, always go high — two to three inches proud, with soil tapered up to meet the ball. Planting slightly high is a recoverable mistake. Planting deep is usually fatal, just slowly.

Free the roots — this is not optional

What you do here depends on how the plant was grown.

Container-grown stock

Roots in a pot hit the wall and turn. Given long enough they form a dense spiral that will keep spiraling after planting until the plant strangles itself — a girdling root failure that typically shows up seven to fifteen years later as sudden dieback on one side.

  1. Slide the pot off. If it will not release, lay it on its side and roll it, or cut it away. Never pull the plant out by the stem.
  2. Inspect the outside of the ball. If you see roots circling the perimeter, you must cut them.
  3. Make three or four vertical cuts from top to bottom, about an inch deep, evenly spaced around the ball, using a sharp knife or pruners.
  4. Slice off the bottom half-inch of the ball if it is a solid mat of roots, and tease the bottom roots outward with your fingers.
  5. On a severely pot-bound plant, butterfly it: cut the bottom third up the middle and splay the two halves outward over a small cone of soil in the hole.

It feels violent. It is correct. Roots that are not redirected will not redirect themselves.

Balled-and-burlapped stock

  1. Set the plant in the hole first, with the wrapping intact, and get it plumb and at the right height. A B&B ball can crumble once opened.
  2. Backfill about one third of the way to hold it steady.
  3. Cut and remove all twine, especially any wrapped around the trunk. Nylon twine does not rot and will girdle the trunk.
  4. Fold the burlap down and cut away everything on the top third of the ball. Natural burlap below grade will decompose; synthetic burlap will not and must be removed entirely. Natural burlap is dull brown and frays; synthetic is shiny, tightly woven, and often green-tinged. If you are unsure, burn a thread — natural chars, synthetic melts.
  5. Cut off the top one to two rings of any wire basket with bolt cutters and remove them.
  6. Scrape the top of the ball to expose the flare, as in Step 6.

Set the plant and check it from two angles

  1. Lower the plant into the hole by the root ball, never by the trunk or stems.
  2. Confirm the flare height against a straight board laid across the hole. Do this now, before backfilling — adjusting later means lifting the plant again.
  3. Step back and check plumb from two directions ninety degrees apart. A tree that looks straight from the driveway can lean noticeably from the patio.
  4. Rotate for the best face. Every plant has one. Point it toward wherever it will be seen from most.
  5. For a multi-stem or grafted plant, note the graft union and keep it above grade.

Feed at planting with Plant-tone or Holly-tone

This is the single easiest step to get right, and it pays out for years. Espoma’s Plant-tone and Holly-tone are slow-release organic fertilizers built from feather meal, bone meal, alfalfa meal, poultry manure, greensand, and sulfate of potash, with a package of beneficial soil microbes blended in. Two things make them the right choice at planting time rather than a synthetic feed:

  • They release slowly and cannot burn roots. A newly planted root ball has damaged, exposed root tips. A fast-release synthetic fertilizer sitting against them causes chemical burn. Organic granules break down over months as soil microbes work on them, which matches how a plant actually takes up nutrients.
  • They feed the soil, not just the plant. The microbe package and the organic matter improve the soil biology in the root zone, which is exactly what a backfilled hole is short of.

Which one to use

Holly-tone (4-3-4) is for acid-loving plants. It contains elemental sulfur, so it actively lowers soil pH as it works. Use it for rhododendron, azalea, holly, mountain laurel, andromeda, pieris, hydrangea, blueberry, dogwood, magnolia, oak, ferns, pachysandra, and needled evergreens including pine, spruce, fir, hemlock, and juniper.

Plant-tone (5-3-3) is the all-purpose version, for everything else: deciduous trees and shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vegetables. Note two common exceptions — arborvitae and boxwood are evergreens that do not want acidic soil. Feed those with Plant-tone, not Holly-tone. This trips people up constantly, because both plants look like exactly the kind of thing Holly-tone is for.

A Connecticut advantage. Our glacial soils run naturally acidic, often in the 5.0 to 5.5 range. That is a headache for lawns, which want 6.0 to 7.0 and need lime. But it happens to be close to ideal for the enormous list of acid-loving plants above — which is a large part of why rhododendron, mountain laurel (our state flower), blueberry, and hemlock all thrive here. Holly-tone maintains a condition your soil already tends toward.

How to apply it at planting

  1. Mix the fertilizer into the backfill soil on your tarp, rather than dumping it into the bottom of the hole where it sits in a concentrated band.
  2. Use the rates in the table in Part Six — for shrubs, roughly one cup per foot of branch spread.
  3. Backfill, then water in thoroughly. The granules need moisture to begin breaking down.

If you want the maximum head start, Espoma’s Bio-tone Starter Plus is formulated specifically for the moment of planting, with a heavier dose of mycorrhizal fungi. It is a fine substitute for this one application, but Plant-tone and Holly-tone are what you will be using twice a year for the life of the plant, so there is a simplicity argument for just using them from day one.

Backfill with the soil you dug out

The old advice was to fill the hole with rich compost or bagged planting mix. Research over the past thirty years has consistently found that this is counterproductive in anything other than a fully amended bed, and the reason is intuitive once you see it: a hole full of light, rich, fast-draining material surrounded by dense native soil behaves like a buried flowerpot. Roots reach the interface, find the native soil harder and less hospitable, and turn back — the same girdling problem as a container. Meanwhile, in clay, the amended hole collects water from the surrounding soil and holds it.

Use your native soil. Break up the clods, pull out rocks and roots, and if you want to amend, blend in no more than about 10 to 20 percent compost by volume — enough to improve structure, not enough to create a distinct soil boundary.

If your native soil is genuinely unworkable, the answer is to amend the entire bed to a consistent texture, or to build a raised bed. Not to amend one hole.

  1. Backfill in layers of about four to six inches.
  2. Firm each layer with your hands or the flat of a shovel, gently. Do not stomp it. You are eliminating air pockets, not compacting soil.
  3. Water lightly between layers to help soil settle into voids around the ball.
  4. Stop at the flare. Never bring soil up over the top of the root ball.

Water it in and build a saucer

The first watering is not about moisture. It is a construction step: water is what carries fine soil into the remaining air pockets around the root ball. Air pockets against roots dry them out and kill them.

  1. Fill the basin slowly and let it drain completely.
  2. Fill it a second time. On a large tree, this may be twenty gallons.
  3. Top off any settling with more backfill, keeping the flare exposed.

Then build a watering saucer: a low berm of soil, three to four inches high, ringing the outer edge of the planting hole. This creates a basin that holds water directly over the root ball instead of letting it run off across the yard. It matters more than people expect, especially on any slope. Leave the berm in place through the first full growing season, then knock it down so it does not hold water against the plant in winter.

Mulch — two to three inches, never touching the trunk

Mulch does more work per dollar than anything else in a landscape, and it is covered in full in Part Five. The application rules are short:

  • Two to three inches deep. Under two inches does not suppress weeds or hold moisture. Over four inches starts to shed water and starve roots of oxygen.
  • Pull it back three to six inches from the trunk or stems. A doughnut, not a volcano. There should be a clear ring of bare soil around the base with the flare fully visible.
  • Cover as much of the root zone as you can. For a tree, extend the ring at least three feet out from the trunk — ideally to the drip line. The root system is far wider than most people picture.
  • Mulch a bed, not a series of rings, where plants are grouped. Continuous mulched beds outperform individual rings in a lawn, because the plants are not competing with turf roots.

Stake only if you have to, and remove it after one season

Most trees do not need staking, and a staked tree develops a weaker trunk than an unstaked one — trunk taper and strength are a direct response to the flexing a tree does in wind. Stake only when:

  • The root ball is small relative to a large canopy
  • The site is genuinely windy, or on a slope
  • The tree is bare-root, or the ball will not hold the tree upright on its own
  • Deer rubbing or foot traffic is a real risk

If you do stake: use two or three stakes outside the root ball, driven into undisturbed soil. Attach with broad, flexible strapping — never wire, never bare rope, never wire in a garden hose sleeve, all of which cut into bark. Set the ties low, at about the lower third of the trunk, and leave enough slack that the tree can sway a few inches. Remove everything after one growing season. Forgotten stake straps girdling a mature trunk is a depressingly common way to lose a fifteen-year-old tree.

Prune almost nothing at planting

The old rule about cutting back the top to “balance” a reduced root system has been thoroughly disproved. Leaves are what produce the sugars that build new roots. Removing them slows establishment.

At planting, remove only:

  • Broken, cracked, or clearly dead wood
  • Branches that are crossing and rubbing
  • Nursery tags, wire, and labels — these girdle branches within two or three seasons and get forgotten every single time

Everything else waits until the plant has been in the ground a full year.

Part four

The Watering Schedule

This is the most important section in this guide

You can dig a perfect hole, set the flare exactly at grade, use the right fertilizer, and mulch it beautifully — and still lose the plant in eight weeks by watering it wrong. The reverse is also true: plants installed with mediocre technique routinely survive because somebody watered them properly.

Improper watering is the number one cause of new plant failure in Connecticut landscapes. Not cold. Not deer. Not disease. Water.

Why new plants are so much harder to water than established ones

An established shrub has a root system spread through several cubic yards of soil. It has enormous buffering capacity — it can go two weeks without rain and barely notice.

A newly planted shrub has all of its roots inside the original root ball, which might be twelve inches across. Everything outside that ball is soil the plant cannot yet reach. Two consequences follow, and both are counterintuitive:

  1. You must water the root ball itself, not the area around it. Aim the hose at the base of the plant, over the ball. Water applied three feet away is water the plant cannot access for at least a year.
  2. Container root balls dry out far faster than the surrounding soil. Nursery container mix is mostly bark and peat — it is designed to drain fast. Dropped into Connecticut clay, it acts like a sponge sitting on a plate: it can be bone dry while the soil an inch away is damp. This is why a plant can wilt after a rainstorm.

Establishment takes about one year per inch of trunk caliper. A two-inch caliper maple needs supplemental water for roughly two growing seasons. A four-inch tree needs four. This is the number most homeowners are shocked by, and it is why so many trees that looked fine in year one decline in year three: everybody stopped watering after the first summer.

Slow delivery matters as much as volume. A hose blasting at full pressure for two minutes mostly runs off. The same hose at a trickle for thirty minutes soaks in. A five-gallon bucket with two small holes drilled in the bottom, set on the root ball and refilled, is a perfectly good tool.

Perennials have small root balls and dry out fastest of anything on this list. They are also the most forgiving of a missed watering in the first week and the least forgiving in weeks two and three, when the original root ball has been depleted but new roots have not yet reached out.

Broadleaf evergreens: the special case

Rhododendron, mountain laurel, holly, andromeda, boxwood, and cherry laurel need everything above plus a specific fall regime. Because they transpire all winter (see Figure 4), they must go into the freeze fully hydrated.

From late September until the ground freezes, water every broadleaf evergreen deeply every 10 to 14 days unless it has rained an inch or more. Continue right through October and November. This single practice prevents most of the winter browning people see on rhododendrons in March. It is the most commonly skipped watering of the entire year, because nobody thinks about watering in November.

How to tell whether it actually needs water

Do not water on a schedule alone. Check first, every time. Three reliable methods:

  • The finger test. Push aside the mulch and push a finger two to three inches into the root ball itself, not the soil beside it. Damp means wait. Dry or barely moist means water.
  • The screwdriver test. An eight-inch screwdriver pushed into moist soil slides in with light pressure. If it stops at an inch, the soil is dry below.
  • The trowel test. For anything you are unsure about, dig a small hole four inches deep at the edge of the root ball and look. It takes thirty seconds and removes all guesswork.

Overwatering kills too, and it looks like underwatering

Yellowing leaves, wilting, and dieback are the symptoms of both drought and root rot, which is why so many people respond to an overwatered plant by watering it more. In saturated soil, roots cannot get oxygen; they suffocate, then rot, then the plant wilts because it has no functioning roots to take up water — even though it is sitting in mud.

If a plant is wilting and the soil is wet, stop watering. Check drainage. In heavy clay, this is the more likely of the two problems.

Rain does not count the way you think it does

A half-inch shower wets the mulch and the top inch of soil and does essentially nothing for a root ball twelve inches deep. Treat rainfall as meaningful only at an inch or more, and even then, check the root ball — mulch and dense canopy both shed rain away from the base of the plant. Put a rain gauge in the yard and stop estimating.

When to water

Early morning is best, between 5 and 9 a.m. Foliage dries quickly as the day warms, evaporative loss is low, and the plant enters the heat of the day fully charged. Evening watering leaves foliage wet overnight and invites fungal disease. Midday watering is not wasteful in the way people claim, but a good deal of it evaporates before it soaks in.

Fall and winter

Keep watering until the ground freezes — typically late November or early December in Connecticut. Then stop. Resume in spring when soil thaws. During a winter thaw of several days with no snow cover, a deep watering of newly planted evergreens is worthwhile.

Part five

Mulch: What It Actually Does

Mulch is treated as a decorative finish, sold by color, and applied by volume once a year. That undersells it badly. A correctly applied mulch layer is the closest thing landscaping has to a free lunch — it is doing eight or nine separate jobs simultaneously, several of which directly address the Connecticut weather problems described in Part One.

It buffers the plant against weather extremes

This is the reason mulch belongs in a conversation about frost and winter damage.

  • It moderates soil temperature. Bare soil in a Connecticut winter swings dramatically — sun-warmed and thawing by afternoon, refrozen by night. Two to three inches of mulch insulates the root zone and flattens that curve, which directly reduces the freeze-thaw cycling that causes frost heave. A mulched new planting is meaningfully less likely to be pushed out of the ground over winter.
  • It keeps the soil unfrozen longer in fall. That extends the root-growing window by days or weeks at the exact moment a fall planting needs it most.
  • It cuts summer soil temperature too. Bare soil in July can reach the point where fine roots in the top few inches simply cook. Mulched soil stays substantially cooler.
  • It reduces evaporation dramatically. A mulched root zone holds moisture far longer than a bare one, which reduces watering frequency and, more importantly, prevents the wet-dry-wet swings that stress new roots.

It removes competition

Weeds are not an aesthetic problem around a new planting. They are direct competitors for the exact water and nutrients you are supplying, in the exact root zone you are trying to establish. A three-inch mulch layer blocks light to weed seed at the surface and prevents most annual weed germination outright, and it makes the few that do come through easy to pull.

Grass is the underrated competitor. Turf growing right up to a young tree trunk measurably slows the tree’s growth. This is the strongest argument for wide mulch rings rather than narrow ones.

It protects the trunk from equipment

String trimmer and mower damage at the base of young trees is one of the leading causes of death in landscape trees, and it is completely preventable. A wide mulch ring means the mower never has to come near the trunk. Repeated trimmer strikes girdle a young tree the same way a wire would, just more slowly.

It builds soil as it decomposes

Organic mulch breaks down from the bottom up, adding organic matter to the top few inches of soil, feeding earthworms and soil microbes, improving structure and water-holding capacity, and gradually converting compacted subsoil into something roots want to grow in. This is a slow, compounding return that a stone or rubber mulch cannot provide.

It prevents crusting, erosion, and disease splash

Raindrops hitting bare soil compact the surface into a crust that sheds water. Mulch absorbs that impact. On any slope, mulch also prevents the erosion and runoff that carries your fertilizer into the street. And by stopping soil from splashing onto lower foliage, it reduces transmission of soil-borne fungal diseases — a real benefit for roses, hydrangea, and many perennials.

Choosing mulch

  • Shredded hardwood bark — the reliable default. Knits together so it stays put on slopes, decomposes at a reasonable rate, and looks appropriate in most Connecticut landscapes.
  • Pine bark mini nuggets — longer lasting, slightly acidifying. Good around Holly-tone plants. Floats in heavy rain, so avoid on slopes and in swales.
  • Pine straw — light, acidifying, excellent for rhododendron and azalea beds. Uncommon in Connecticut but works well.
  • Leaf mold or compost — the best soil builder of the group. Breaks down fast, so it needs topping more often, and it does less to suppress weeds.
  • Avoid rubber mulch — it does not decompose, does not build soil, holds heat, and is nearly impossible to remove once installed.
  • Be careful with dyed mulch — often ground pallet and construction waste rather than bark. The dye is generally harmless; the wood underneath is variable in quality and can tie up nitrogen at the soil surface.
  • Do not put landscape fabric under mulch in a planting bed. It blocks the organic matter from reaching the soil, roots grow into it and get trapped, and within three years weeds are rooting in the decomposed mulch on top of it. Fabric belongs under stone, not under bark.

Refreshing mulch each year

The most common mistake in annual maintenance is adding two fresh inches on top of the two inches already there, every spring, forever. After four years that bed is eight inches deep, roots are growing up into the mulch layer, and the plants are suffocating.

Measure the existing depth first. If it is already at two to three inches, do not add more — instead, rake and fluff the existing layer to break up any matted crust and restore the color. Add new material only to bring the total back up to about three inches. And every spring, pull mulch back from trunks and stems that have been buried over the winter.

Part six

Ongoing Feeding: Twice a Year, Every Year

Feeding at planting gets the plant started. Feeding it twice a year for the rest of its life is what keeps it blooming heavily, holding good color, and resisting stress. A rhododendron fed on schedule and one that is never fed will look like different cultivars within five years.

Three rules that are easy to break

  • Never apply to frozen ground. The granules sit on the surface and wash off in the spring melt, straight into the storm drain. If the ground has frozen, wait until spring.
  • Do not apply on top of mulch at the normal rate. Either rake the mulch aside, apply, water in, and replace it — or double the quantity if you are broadcasting over mulch.
  • Use Plant-tone for arborvitae and boxwood, not Holly-tone. Both are evergreens, neither wants acidic soil.

One more note that applies specifically here: Espoma also makes Rose-tone for roses, Tree-tone, and Garden-tone for vegetables. If you are keeping it simple, Plant-tone and Holly-tone will cover a residential Connecticut landscape entirely. There is no benefit to owning six bags.

Part seven

Connecticut-Specific Problems Worth Planning For

Deer

In most of Connecticut, deer pressure is heavy enough that it should shape the plant list, not just the aftercare. A newly planted shrub is the most attractive thing in the yard: tender, well-watered, and unfamiliar. Options, in rough order of effectiveness:

  • Plant material deer avoid — boxwood, Japanese pieris, spruce, barberry, spirea, viburnum (some), ornamental grasses, russian sage, catmint, lavender, ferns, daffodil.
  • Physical protection through the first winter — a cage of welded wire or a burlap screen. Nothing else is as reliable.
  • Repellents — effective if rotated between two or three different active ingredients and reapplied after rain and after new growth appears. A single product applied once in May does nothing by August.

Also watch for buck rub in October and November, which shreds bark on young trees with trunks in the one-to-four-inch range. A simple plastic trunk guard or a wire cage through the fall prevents it.

Voles

Voles nest in deep mulch against a stem and chew bark at the soil line all winter under snow cover, girdling the plant. The owner finds it dead in April with no visible cause. This is another reason for the mulch doughnut: keeping a clear ring of bare soil around every trunk removes the cover they need.

Road salt

Anything within about fifteen feet of a plowed road or driveway takes salt spray and salt-laden meltwater. Damage shows up as browning on the road-facing side in spring. Mitigations: burlap screens on the road side over winter, heavy watering in early spring to flush salt from the root zone, gypsum applications on affected beds, and — the real fix — choosing salt-tolerant species for those positions in the first place.

Winter protection for the first season

A plant that went in during the fall benefits from one winter of extra help. It does not need it forever.

  • Burlap screens on the windward and southwest sides of broadleaf evergreens. Screens, not wraps — do not wrap the plant tightly, which traps moisture and blocks air. Stake burlap a foot away as a windbreak.
  • Anti-desiccant sprays on broadleaf evergreens, applied on a day above 40°F in late November or early December, with a second application in late January during a thaw. These work by coating the leaf surface to slow water loss. They are useful but they are a supplement to fall watering, not a replacement for it.
  • Do not wrap in plastic. It cooks the plant on the first sunny day.
  • Extra mulch — an additional inch after the ground has frozen helps hold it frozen and reduces heaving. Pull it back in spring.

Soil testing

The UConn Soil Nutrient Analysis Laboratory in Storrs will test a sample inexpensively and give you pH, organic matter, and nutrient levels with specific recommendations. For a whole-property planting plan, it is worth doing. Take separate samples from areas that behave differently — the shaded north bed and the sunny front slope are not the same soil.

Common Questions

Should I put compost or topsoil in the planting hole?

Only a small amount — no more than 10 to 20 percent of the backfill. Heavily amending a single hole in native soil creates a container effect that discourages roots from leaving. If the soil is genuinely poor, amend the whole bed instead.

Do I need to water if it rained?

Check the root ball. A half-inch shower does not reach it. Only rainfall of an inch or more should change your schedule, and even then, verify.

How long until a plant is established?

Perennials: one growing season. Shrubs: one to two years, three for large evergreens. Trees: roughly one year per inch of trunk caliper.

Can I plant in October?

Early October, yes, for most deciduous material, if you are in central Connecticut or on the shoreline. After mid-October you are gambling. Broadleaf evergreens should wait for spring regardless.

Is fall really better than spring for planting?

For deciduous trees and shrubs, often yes — warm soil, cool air, and reliable rain make for fast rooting with low stress. For evergreens, marginally hardy plants, and anything bare-root, spring is safer.

Can I use Holly-tone on everything?

No. It acidifies soil, which will work against plants that want neutral conditions — including arborvitae, boxwood, lilac, clematis, and most vegetables. Use Plant-tone for those.

Do I have to remove the burlap and wire basket?

Remove all twine, all synthetic burlap, and at minimum the top third of natural burlap and the top rings of the wire basket. Leaving the top intact wicks moisture away from the root ball and can girdle the trunk.

How deep should mulch be, honestly?

Two to three inches, measured. Never more than four. And never in contact with the trunk.

My plant looks fine — can I stop watering after the first summer?

For perennials, yes. For shrubs and especially trees, no. This is the most expensive assumption in residential landscaping. Year two and year three drought stress is what kills trees that appeared to establish fine.
